1. What is a 100 HP Electric Motor?

Fundamentally, one mechanical horsepower generates 745.7 watts of electrical power. The term “100 HP electric motor” refers to an electric motor that generates 100 horsepower during a certain cycle of operation.

Electrical motors are divided into two types: AC motors and DC electric motors. AC electric motors convert AC into mechanical power. On the other hand, DC motors convert DC into mechanical power.

2. What are the Parts of a 100 HP Motor?

When you use your 100 HP electric motor, there are five most essential parts inside it to power it up. Every part plays a critical role in converting electrical power into mechanical energy.

And they also make interactions between the motor’s electrical field and magnetic field, which generates shaft rotation. And the shaft rotation is behind the scene, which produces mechanical energy for your 100 HP electrical motor’s operation.

In your electric motor, the rotor is the component that rotates continuously during the operation. Conductors inside the rotor hold electrical currents and release the current when other parts need it.

The rotor rotates the shaft inside the motor, which produces mechanical energy. The conductors associate the magnetic field, which turns the shafts by generating forces. By the way, many rotors have perpetual rotors. And stators in the rotors stock the conductors.


Perpetual magnets or windings form the stator. It is the permanent part of a 100 HP electric motor. You need to use several thin metal sheets to make a stator. Laminations are the name for them. The lamination can avoid the loss of energy by combining the solid stator core in the electric motor.


Bearings are the metal balls that support the rotor to rotate in your 100 HP motors. And the motor housing inside the motor supports the bearing to perform. The motor shaft that rotates extends outside the motor through the bearings.

The force load is applied to the shaft of the outer bearing. Overhung is the name for the outer load.


The windings are held in place by the coils within the motors. Wires make up the majority of windings. Magnetic poles are created by rapping wires on coils.

There are two different pole configurations for magnetic fields:  salient and non-salient. The winding wound forms the magnetic field of the salient pole.

Non-salient pole motors, on the other hand, disperse the stator winding in the pole’s face spaces.


The commutators switch your 100 HP motors’ input. They essentially switch DC motors and, on occasion, AC motors. Slip-ring segments make up the commutators.

The shaft aids in the insulation of the commutators. The armature current is supplied by the permanent brushes, which touch the rotating commutators.

The current reversal is powered by the rotating commutators, which also spin the rotor from point to point.

3. What is the most Efficient Process for Wiring a 100 HP Electric Motor?

We will be describing the wiring process for a three-phase 100 HP motor. Because the three-phase is more efficient than a one-phase motor.

There is no fixed rule for the wire coloring by the national electric code. But it is conventional to use black, red, and blue color wire for L1, L2, and L3, respectively.

L2 reaches its peak voltage after L1 does, and the L3 after L2 with the voltage cycle. You can use two wiring configurations for wiring a three-phase motor: Wye and Delta wiring.

Before going to the wiring, you need to complete some essential preparation.


  • Check if the power supply is off of the motor.
  • After opening the wiring box of your 100 HP electric motor, you will find 9 wires labeled with 1 to 9.
  • Assure yourself about the wiring information. If any hesitation, take help from the wiring document.
  • Ensure the right wire nuts to use in your 100 HP motor’s conductors.
  • Check the motor if the reverse direction is working. You can try line swapping for the test. For example, move the supply line T1 to T2; and the T2 to the T1. You can use a motor control switch to do this.

Wiring Process:

Wye Wiring-

First Step

To use 230-volt wire, you must make a low voltage connection. Wire numbers 4, 5, and 6 are combined to form a single wire. Connect the L1 wire to the numbers 1 and 7 on the meter. Connect the L2 to the numbers 2 and 8. Connect the L3 to the motor leads at the numbers 3 and 9.

Second Step

It is now necessary to construct high-voltage wire, which will operate at 460 volts. Combine the motor leads 6 and 9 together this time. 5 and 8 are combined. In addition, combine 4 and 7.

Attach the L1 conductor to motor lead 1 once they have been combined. L2 is connected to motor lead 2, while L3 is connected to motor lead 3.

Third Step

The last stage in wye wiring is to check that the grounding of your 100 HP electric motor is correct. In this case, you should connect the ground wire to the ground plane of your motor. Close the wire box for your 100 HP motor after tightening the bolts.

Delta Wiring-

First Step

The connecting method in delta wire is distinct from that in other wiring types. To create a low voltage connection, you must connect the L1 conductor to the motor leads with the numbers 1, 6, and 7.

Link L2 to the numbers 2, 4, and 8. Finally, link L3 to the 3, 5, and 9 positions.

Second Step

Motor leads 6 and 9 should be connected to provide a 460 high voltage connection. Combine the numbers 4 and 7, and numbers 5 and 8. Connect the motor lead to the L1 conductor, and then attach the L2 conductor to the motor lead 2.

Last but not least, connect L3 to lead 3  to complete the circuit.

Third Step

Now, as like the wye wiring, attach the grounding wires to the ground plane of your motor to ensure the proper grounding.

4. What are the Applications of 100 HP Electric Motors in Industry?

The 100 HP motors are primarily used for heavy-duty purposes. The applications of the motor are as follows.

  • Rolling mils to rotate them use motors.
  • Paper mills’ rolling machines use electric motors.
  • A mechanized conveyor system uses electric motors.
  • Elevators that lift weights use motors.
  • Escalator stairs use electric motors.
  • Large size HVACs use 10 hp motors.
  • Industrial automation and vehicles use 100 hp motors.

5. How to Replace 100 HP Motor in Air Compressor?

To start changing the 100 HP electric motor in your air compressor, first, you have to switch off the power connection of your air compressor. After disconnecting the power, verify once that the power is disconnected completely.

You don’t need to disconnect the input power; disconnecting the output power will be okay. You will see that the motor is attached to the compressor with four bolts. To remove the motor, you need to lose the bolts and open them.

You need to remove the motor pulley as well. Use a pulley remover to remove the pulley. After removing the bolt and the pulley, your old motor is unattached. Now keep aside the motor and clean the compressor thoroughly.

Probably you already have the new motor at your home. Open the wiring box of your motor and properly wire them as we mentioned above in this article. Attach the new pulley back into your motor.

Place the motor in the right place on the air compressor. Attach the bolts tightly with the nuts on the compressor. After placing and installing the motor on your compressor, it is time to link the external connections again.

Connect the external connection of your motor to your power supply unit properly. You have successfully replaced the old motor with a new one on your air compressor.

6. How to Reverse a 100 HP Electric Motor?

Sometimes you may need to reverse the direction of your 100 HP motor for particular purposes. And, it is beneficial to know how to do this. As you think, it is not a complex task.

Because most of the motors are directed based on their wiring and magnetic field. To reverse the direction of rotation of an electric motor, you must first reverse the polarity of the magnetic field created by the motor itself. And to do this, you must follow a straightforward procedure.

Simply change any two power leads in your motor to make it work. Changing the lines between lead 1 and lead 3 is an example of what you can do. Furthermore, it is the most typical technique in reversing the direction of electric motors for the sake of simplicity.

7. What is the 100 HP 1 Phase and 3 Phase Amp Rating?

The ampere rating, often known as the ampere rating, is the amount of electrical current for each fuse in an electrical device. Primarily, the amp rating shows the maximum amount of continuous current that may pass through the fuse. And this occurs under a certain set of circumstances.

The phenomenon is also referred to as current-carrying capacity in certain circles. This is referred to as “ampacity” in another context. The National Electrical Codes predefine the amp rating value.

For a 220 to 240 volt 3 phase motor, the amp rating is 245 to 248. The rate is 123 to 124 for a 440 to 480 volt 3 phase motor.

On the other hand, for a 220 volt 1 phase motor, the amp rating is 239, which is 125 in 415 volts.

And all these are for a 100 HP electric motor.

8. What is the Power Consumption of a 100 HP Motor?

To calculate the power consumption of a 100 HP motor, you need to follow the following formula:

W= A x V x sqrt3.

Here, W is the watt that the motor consumes, A is the ampere, and V is the voltage. Sqrt3 is the square root 33, which is 1.73.

For example, if a 100 HP motor works with a full load of 460 volts with 123 amperes, the power consumption will be W= 123 x 460 x 1.73= 97,883 watts or 97.8 KW.
