Figure 1- Motor Testing

The testing of the 5kW electric motor is important to improve its readiness and uptime and it also helps reduce the overall cost. The testing consists of particular maintenance and management tools to help identify any issue before it gets bigger and causes any potential damage. By dedicating time to thorough testing of the motors on a regular and planned basis the issues can be prevented and resolved with minimum cost and disruption. Below mentioned are some of the testing techniques that you can follow.

Hipot Test:

This test is performed to determine the efficacy and the cable insulation. It detects the weakness and failure within the cable and wires insulations.  The high potential (hipot) also known as dielectric strength testing, is advised to perform after conducting an initial visual inspection.

Using AC or DC voltage, the high potential test involves applying the current between the frame and the electrical circuit. It is run by the continuous 1000V, 50-60 Hz if you are testing the strength of the new windings. To avoid the overstressing of the insulation, a high potential test should be conducted at 85%. If the insulations in reconditioned, the test voltage should be 60% to avoid the overloading of the material.

Surge Test:

To check the burnout and for the prediction of future motor failure, the surge test is done. It allows identifying the shortened motor conductor’s turns and deteriorating conductor insulations, these both are the first sign of the electrical breakdown of the motor. Chemical deposits on the motor, routine startup movements, and rigorous use can lead to wear of the insulation of the motor winding.

Merger Test:

This test evaluates critical insulation performance. It allows reliable, periodic testing of the insulation performance of the tools, motors, appliances, capacitors, power distribution subsystem, and other electrical equipment and high-performing wirings.

The merger test applies high voltage to the system to measure the leakage current through the insulation. It can be tested periodically to check the motor’s insulation with time. This can indicate wear and tear damage and you can address the problem before it causes serious damage. Keep this in mind this test needs to be operated carefully to prevent any operator injury or equipment damage.

There is also other type of test that you can perform on your electric motor to make sure it is in operating condition and doesn’t require any considerations. These testing also helps you avoid certain damages by helping you find the problems even before it happens.

6. What Are The Major Parts Of A 5kw Electric Motor?

Figure 3- Parts of 5kw Electric Motor

Figure 3- Parts of 5kw Electric Motor

A 5kW electric motor is widely used in different domestic and industrial settings. So it is important to know its parts thoroughly to keep it maintained and functional throughout its lifecycle. Below mentioned are some of the important parts of a 5kW electric motor.

The Stator, Rotor, Brushes and Commutator

The 5kw electric motor depends on the electromagnets. The stator is created by a series of small coils arranged in a circular manner, these coils help 5kW electric motor to generate a magnetic field. Likewise, the rotor is formed by another coil wound around the armature and attached to the shaft. The rotor has metallic brushes that keep continuous contact with the surface of the stator, this is because you cant attach the wires to the rotating coil. The surface that is in contact with the rotor along with the stator windings is connected with the power terminals located in the motor housings.

When the power is given, the magnetic field is produced because of the electricity that flows into the field’s coil. It flows through the brushes and energizes the armature coil. The commutator is also part of the electric motor, in the DC motor that runs on a battery, the commutator works as a switch that is attached to the rotor shaft to reverse the electrical field. This field reversal is crucial to keep the rotor spinning in one direction.

Gears and Belts

The gear and belts are very important parts of the electric motor because the gear system and drive belts convert the spinning shaft motion into some useful movements. The spinning motor shaft is not very useful, it can only be used for spinning the fan blade and drilling purposes, that’s why gear and belts are important. The rotational speed can be increased by the configuration of the belts and gears that leads to the reduction of power. Or you can increase the power while reducing the rotational speed. With the help of gear and belts, multiple functions can be performed simultaneously.

Bearings

Bearings are used to reduce the friction in the electric motor. The larger the motor the more friction is created between the different moving parts of the electric motor. This frictional force reduces the efficiency of the motor by opposing the movement of the rotor and that ultimately leads to wearing down the parts.  Most motors have the bearing between the stator and the rotor to minimize the air gap. Large motors have roller bearings while small motors have ball bearings. Bearings require periodic lubrication, this maintenance procedure is important along with the service and cleaning of the stator windings and rotor brushes.

These are the main parts of a 5kW 3 phase motor. Although a 5kW also has different components that help it perform the operations these are the major parts and they need to be maintained and serviced carefully in order to run the electric motor efficiently and effectively.

8. What are the ambient operating conditions of a 5 kW three-phase electric motor?

The operating conditions for electric motors are important factors that decide the service life of motors and have a direct impact on the motor part’s functionality. Below are some of the ambient operating conditions for a 5kW 3 phase electric motor

Operating temperature:

The maximum ambient temperature to operate a 5kW electric motor is 40°C. As the temperature rises above that, the efficiency of the motor will go down.

Humidity:

The humidity should be below 80% even when a 5kW electric motor is running. This helps to extend the life of the motor and reduce the risk of corrosion damage.

Installation altitude:

It is also an important factor to operate a 5kW electric motor at its full efficiency. The cooling system of an electric motor is impaired at a higher altitude because of the low-density air.  The 5kW electric motors are designed to work below 3300 feet.

Protection category:

It is important to protect a person operating the electric motor from any kind of potential health threat. When an excessive amount of the current passes through the electric motor the motor protection unit trips. The circuit breakers and fuses are used as protection units. It saves the operator from electric shocks, also the control equipment, and many other components.

9. What is a three phase electric motor?

The function of an electric motor is to convert electrical energy into a mechanical form. According to the type of supply, the electric motors can be differentiated into AC motors or DC motors. Let’s have a look that what is the induction motor, its type, and its applications.

The induction motors specifically three-phase induction motors are widely used AC (alternating current) motors to generate mechanical power for industrial applications. Among all the motors used in the industry, 80% of motors are three-phase induction motors. That makes the induction motor most important among all the other types of motors.

A three-phase induction motor operates on a three-phase supply. The three-phase supply current creates the electromagnetic field in the stator windings that leads to the generation of the torque in the rotor windings of the electric motor having a magnetic field.

There are two types of three-phase electric motor based on rotor winding.

Squirrel Cage:

The shape of the rotor of this motor resembles the shape of the cage of the squirrel that’s why it is known as a squirrel cage induction motor. The construction of this type of motor is simple and 80% of induction motors are squirrel cage induction motors. The rotor of this motor consists of a cylindrical laminated core and has slots on the outer lining. The slots are skewed at some angle. It is because it helps to prevent magnetic locking between the rotor teeth and the stator. It increases the length of the rotor conductor and hence increases the resistance in the rotor.

Slip-Ring:

It is also known as a wound rotor and it consists of a laminated cylindrical core with slots on the outer lining. These slots have rotor windings. In this kind of three-phase electric motor, the windings are wounded in a way that the number of poles of the rotor windings is the same as the number of poles of stator windings. End terminals of the rotor windings are connected to the slip-rings this is why it’s called a slip ring three-phase induction motor. The external resistance can be connected with the rotor circuit through the slip ring and brushes. This helps in controlling the speed of the motor and also improves the starting torque. The external resistance is employed for the starting purpose and if it remains connected while the motor is in running condition, it can increase the rotor copper loss. High rotor resistance is good for the starting condition. So, the external resistance is connected to the rotor circuit during the starting condition.

The maintenance of the slip ring motor is more and that’s why this motor is only used when variable speed control and high starting torque are required. Otherwise, the squirrel cage motors are preferred over slip-ring motors.
