Three-phase electric motors have three coils (windings) connected to the three different phases for power generation. The three winding have six leads (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6) connected to main supply lines (L1, L2, and L3). Two common wiring types are used for wiring three-phase electric motors; Wye and Delta.

  • Wye wiring:  

Since three phase motors are compatible with dual voltage, you can connect the motor on low-voltage and high-voltage.

Low voltage:

Three-phase motor supports low voltage connection on 230V. Connect the leads 1 and 7 to L1, 2 and 8 to L2, and lastly, connect 3 and 9 to L3. Now, attach the remaining leads (4, 5, and 6) to run your three-phase motor on a low-voltage power supply. 

High Voltage: 

If you are thinking of how to wire a 3 phase electric motor on 460V (high voltage), you need to connect T1 to L1, T2 to L2, and T3 to L3. After that, connect the leads 4 to 7, 5 to 8, and 6 to 9. 

  • Delta wiring:

Wire the 3-phase motor on 230V or 460V on the delta connection for your application. Let’s see how;

Low Voltage: 

To make a low voltage, 230V connection on delta wiring, connect the lead 1, 6, and 7 to L1, 2, 4, and 8 to L2, and 3, 5, and 9 to L3. It will create a closed-circuit connection for motor operation. 

High Voltage: 

In the delta connection, you can make a 460V connection simply by connecting T1 to L1, T2 to L2, and the lead 3 to L3. Now, you need to connect the remaining leads 4 to 7, 5 to 8, and 6 to 9. In this way, you can wire a three-phase motor on high voltage.
