Do you know any industry that says we don’t have to work with motors? Chances are you don’t. That’s because industrial motors have become integral to many industries and businesses today, powering machines, driving production lines, and automating processes.

At the heart of it is efficiency; industrial motor technology has enabled us to produce more efficiently than ever. But, production efficiency is not the only benefit that industrial motors offer.

They also play an essential role in driving productivity to a whole new level, which can result in greater profits for businesses and improved customer satisfaction. This blog post will further explore industrial motors and their key benefits. So let’s delve into it.

What is an industrial motor| The basic science behind it

Figure 2: What is an industrial motor?

An industrial motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical power for industrial applications. Industrial motors are used in various industries, from automotive and aviation to manufacturing and production. They are typically powered by electricity, but some may also be driven by diesel or other fuels.

According to Mordor Intelligence, The estimated size of the Industrial Motors Market is USD 21.41 billion in 2023, predicted to increase to USD 24.09 billion by 2028. During the forecast period of 2023-2028, the market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.39%.

Industrial production relies heavily on motors, which can be designed and developed using various advanced methods such as alignment, monitoring, connections, testing, cost- and time-saving measures, and safety and security enhancements.

Utilizing these approaches, energy-saving motors and intelligent drives can improve efficiency and performance and simplify troubleshooting.

Industrial motor types

Well, we all know that every industry has different requirements, and so do industrial motors. Some may need motors that can deliver higher power, while others may require motors with better durability or speed control. So, here is a quick rundown of the types of industrial motors:

AC induction motor

Figure 4 AC Induction Motor

Figure 4: AC induction motor

AC induction motors, also known asynchronous motors, are widely used in industries due to their reliability and low cost. They create a rotating magnetic field in the stator, which “induces” an electric current in the rotor, causing it to rotate.

The rotor’s speed is slightly slower than the stator’s magnetic field to generate torque. If the rotor rotates faster than the stator’s field, the motor can even function as a generator. Induction motors are popular because they are affordable, reliable, and don’t require commutators, reducing the risk of arcing and wear. That’s why they are extensively utilized in industrial facilities for their simplicity and advantageous characteristics.

AC synchronous motor

Figure 5 AC Synchronous Motor

Figure 5: AC synchronous motor

Let’s talk about AC synchronous motors! These motors are all about perfect synchronization. They groove to the beat of the current supplied, ensuring their shaft rotation matches that frequency.

The stator gets things going with its electromagnets, creating a magnetic field that dances around based on the current characteristics.

Conversely, the rotor brings the magnet magic with its permanent magnets or electromagnets, reacting to the magnetic field and making that shaft spin.

Now, here’s the thing: the rotor needs a physical power connection, and that’s where the commutator comes in. It’s like a conductor brush but can wear out after all the boogieing.

While they might not be as expected because of the higher cost, AC synchronous motors are power efficiency champs, outshining their induction motor pals. But wait, there’s more! These motors have a unique superpower, they can fix the power factor of industrial facilities.

DC synchronous motor

Figure 6 DC Synchronous Motor

Figure 6: DC synchronous motor

Although less common nowadays with the rise of AC motors, DC synchronous motors have their unique charm. Unlike their AC counterparts, these motors rock a static magnetic field in the stator while the rotor gets all the action with a rotating magnetic field, thanks to the trusty commutator.

The rotor’s field tries to align with the stator’s, creating torque for that output shaft to spin. Here’s the twist: permanent magnet DC motors ditch the electromagnets and instead rely on magnets for that static field.

That means the magnetic field is always there, even when the motor is off, so watch out for any nearby ferromagnetic materials that might get attracted to it in industrial settings.

Plus, these motors can be a bit hefty and bulky due to the magnet party happening in the stator. They still have their special allure in the motor world.

Some significant benefits of industrial motors

Apart from their power efficiency, industrial motors offer some other excellent benefits. They’re great for applications where speed and torque must be consistent, no matter the load variation. Some other benefits are:

  • Industrial motors are designed with rugged components that withstand harsh and challenging conditions.
  • With proper maintenance, industrial motors have a longer lifespan than other motors.
  • Many industrial motor designs take advantage of innovative features to reduce energy consumption and help you save money.
  • Your business can also benefit from the improved safety features of industrial motors, like overload protection and short-circuit proofing.

Finally, many are available with customizations to fit your specific needs. So the bottom line is that industrial motors offer numerous advantages for various applications.
